Can High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Treatment Replace Face Lifts (HIFU)?

High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is an advanced cosmetic treatment for skin tightening and  considered a noninvasive and painless alternative to face lifts. It uses ultrasound energy to boost the  production of collagen to produce youthful firm skin.

HIFU was developed as an anticancer treatment and the technology was adapted for aesthetic use in  2008. HIFU was then approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009 for brow lifts. The  device was also cleared by the FDA in 2014 to enhance lines and wrinkles of the upper chest and  neckline (décolletage).

Several small clinical trials have found HIFU to be safe and effective for facial rejuvenation and relieving wrinkles. People are able to see results in a few months after treatment without the surgical risks.

Since the procedure is currently used for overall facial rejuvenation, tightening, lifting and body contouring outside the US, it is being evaluated by the FDA for these “off-label” uses.

HIFU Facial

HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to deliver energy to the layers of tissue just below the skin. The  ultrasound energy causes the target tissue to reach a certain temperature and stimulate the cells to  produce more collagen — a protein that provides structure to the skin. This increase in collagen results in a tighter, firmer skin.

Since the high-frequency ultrasound beams are focused on a specific tissue site below the skin’s  surface, there is no damage to the upper layers of the skin and surrounding tissue. HIFU has been found  to be a promising treatment that could replace face lifts, especially in younger people who don’t want the  risks and recovery time associated with surgery.

Response to HIFU treatment varies and several treatments may be required before producing a desired  result, especially in sun-damaged skin or other conditions. A quick consultation with Dr. Grace will  determine if you are a good candidate for this treatment. HIFU may not be appropriate for everyone and is not recommended for some situations, such as severe cases of sagging skin, skin infections and open  skin lesions at the target area, severe or cystic acne, and metallic implants in the treatment area.

HIFU has many aesthetic benefits, including:

● wrinkle reduction

● tightening sagging skin on the neck (sometimes called turkey neck)

● lifting the cheeks, eyebrows, and eyelids

● enhancing jawline definition

● tightening of the décolletage

● smoothing out the skin

Cost

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery states that the average cost of a nonsurgical skin tightening procedure, such as HIFU, was $1700 in 2017, equivalent to $1900 in 2021 (inflation adjusted).  Our introductory Rejuvmed Clinic HIFU treatments are competitively priced, ranging from $1300 to $1500  for three (3) sessions. The final cost of your HIFU treatments will vary depending on the treatment plan  (location and the number of sessions).

Summary

A high intensity focused ultrasound facial, or HIFU facial, can be an effective way to minimize the signs of  aging and the benefits of a HIFU facial can last for about 1 year.
